GWRFC Ladies See Pre-Season Out In Style

GWRFC Ladies saw out their pre-season in style this Sunday as they shone at the SRU Queen of the 10s tournament in Livingston.

Despite drawing in a competitive pool with fellow National 1 side Kirkcaldy, Premiership side Cartha and Premiership side Hillhead Jordanhill, the Greenock girls managed to put on a show and punched well above their weight as they took wins from both Kirkcaldy and Cartha, finishing second in the pool.

It was a hatrick of hatricks for the Greenock girls as Scrum Half Rachel Morrison, Stand Off Beverley Addison and Centre Lesley Routledge all bagged themselves three tries a piece. Other try scorers included Flanker Tina Hemphill and debutant Catherine Guertsen on her first run out for the Wanderers. The 48-5 and 32-0 score lines were bolstered with 2 tries dotted down by Sammy Durnan and Iona St Joseph in the Kirkcaldy game and 2 from Jenny Yates during the Cartha match as the girls from Stewartry Sirens helped the girls out with numbers while two of our own were stuck on the motorway with a flat tyre! Our girls of course repaid the favour as they also took to the field to help out the girls from Stewartry against Broughton and RHC Cougars, with Lesley and Rachel both scoring further tries with them.

The girls narrowly missed out on a slot in the quarter finals, with Watsonians going through as the second placed team with the greatest points difference.

The tournament was a great opportunity for the girls to put their pre-season work into practice and work on their attacking lines ahead of the season starting in two weeks.

The girls now turn their heads to the start of their second National One campaign which begins on the 3rd of September against Glasgow University at the Garscube Sports Complex. Full Details of the girls fixtures can be found here.

GWRFC Ladies are always on the hunt for new players. Fancy trying something new and getting in on the action? Get in touch now. The girls train on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7.00-8.30pm.
